Golf – we love it and we hate it and sometimes we experience both these feelings in the space of two holes, two swings or two swing thoughts!
Why is one game so trying on us why do we always get drawn back to it?
Why are we so obsessed with the game?
Why do we want to play like the superstars – to be just like Tiger, Phil, Jack or Arnie? Why?
Why do we play our regular Saturday morning four-ball against our long time buddies like our lives are dependant on the outcome?
What is it in the game of golf that makes us like this?
We don’t know is the simplist answer. Many have tried and failed to unravel the mysteries of golf and the person who uncovers the answer (and techniques) to ‘master’ this wonderful game for the average player will have the world at their feet and plenty of $$$ in the bank!
For me, with a handicap index of 6.6, I’m a pretty good player, statistically anyway, I am better than the ’statistical average’ for the ‘average’ club golfer – but I lack consistency.
Nothing is worse than shooting 75 the week before the club championships and then come out on the following Saturday and shooting an 83. What handicap we are at is irrelevant – be 6.6, 16.6 or 26.6 the true secret to golf is consistency, gained through continual improvement at the practice range or is it?
Let me ask you a question…
Why is it you go out to the range you pound balls out there at will, high draw, soft fade, hit it low, hit it high at will – you have the ball on a string… then you get on the 1st, you are up against one of the regulars at the club, you know the type… has been a member at the club for 30 years, has only ever owned two sets of clubs in that time… has the dog ugliest swing you have ever seen, hits his driver 30-yards less than you hit your 3-wood, you are 2 up after 5, 4 up at the turn, 3 up with 4 to play, 2 up with 3 to play, 1 up with 2 to play and shaking hands on the 18th after losing the match to the ‘old guy with the dog ugliest swing you have ever seen’.
Why? Why did you lose… again? Mental toughness… he’s has it you don’t and he probably doesn’t even know that he has it!
